Writers, hasten slowly!

The poetry in the snapshot[s] below represent... sage advice from Nicolas Boileau to writers that derived from an ancient Greek adage by way of Latin, "festina lente" (Wikipedia, Festina lente), meaning hasten slowly.

"Hasten slowly..." (Boileau, 1674, & Beaufait, 2015), ver. 1
"Hasten slowly..." (Boileau, 1674, & Beaufait, 2015), ver. 2

The snapshot[s] above comes from a presentation in preparation by Edwards, Beaufait, and Lucovich ([n.p.], [n.d.], except as otherwise noted some rights reserved). The French text comes from the Wikipedia article (Festina lente, History, ¶5, similar rights reserved).

Grammarist: resource site for writers

Though plain in appearance, the Grammarist site looks like a rich source of information for writers – on everything from punctuation and spelling to style. The site sports six categories: usage, words and phrases, spelling, grammar, style, and writing (sidebar, left).

There are numerous avenues into the site, in addition to previews of recent posts displayed 10 at a time in the main column. It has an alphabetical index (top left), as well as a glossary (lower left). "The date on each post reflects either the date that post was first published or the date of its last major revision" (About Grammarist: Colophon, ¶3, retrieved 2013.01.25). Colored tags next to previews of posts indicate to which category each post belongs.

Embedding Proto-Portfolios in Pages: A Critical Detail

If you try to embed a Google spreadsheet in a blog page, without switching to Edit HTML mode, a preview will look something like this:

[angle bracket]...iframe frameborder="0" height="500" src="https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en&hl=en&key=0AgnNbaBa_zgpdFZJRGhWNWoyazJ6N0dDN3lIdXp3OWc&output=html&widget=true" width="500"...[angle brackets]/iframe[angle bracket]

If you paste the iframe code for a spreadsheet into your page in Edit HTML mode, as you should, the spreadsheet will appear in the preview.

Please note, however, that links and scrolling controls aren't functional in previews.

If you have concerns or questions about embedding spreadsheets in pages or posts, please voice them in class, or spell them out in comments on this post.

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' Trailer (VIDEO)

Huffington Post Entertainment announced the release of the movie trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and said, "Breathtaking CGI, deep and rich colors and a feeling of something larger than life pervade the trailer" (2011.04.27). What do you think of it?

The movie is scheduled for release on July 15. I imagine that's for the U.S. I wonder when it will open in Japan.

Link List Addition: British Council Grammar Movies

This preview post announces a link that I'll be adding to the list in the sidebar (Course Links). The link leads to a short catalog of movies on a British Council website. The movies focus on various grammar points: Tenses, Verbs, Functions, Structures, and Other items.
I discovered that British Council site with the help of blogging aficionada, Carla Arena, who Twittered yesterday about a post by Ana Maria Menezes, a colleague in Brazil. Ana Maria had created a post about those and other Grammar Videos a couple days earlier on her Life Feast blog (2009.11.14).

Both Carla and Ana Maria called the British Council movies "fantastic." I can hardly wait to check them out. If any of the grammar points detailed in the Grammar Movies catalog are puzzling you, or giving you grief in your writing. I suggest that you check them out, too.
