Good PowerPoint Design (Osterwalder)

Modeling design principles for business presenters, Ostewalder showed and told it all in 135 slides, including step-by-step builds and appendices (Slideshare, "two years ago" [relative date]). He cut to the chase to introduce four basic rules on slides 15-18, then elaborated on each.

1. Audience's perspective (slide 24, ff.)
2. Content and structure – Tell a story. (slide 51, ff.)
3. Visual design – Keep it simple. (slide 83, ff.)
4. Delivery – a performance for guests (slide 104, ff.)

The highlight for me was the audience profiling tool, a graphic organizer, that Ostewalder introduced on slides 42-46. Try it out!

Exhibit A: a Slideshow from Flickr

The slideshow below shows pictures from Exhibit A, an online, public picture collection of copyright-protected images that I have on Flickr. Flickr is an easy to use photo-sharing site.

Do you recognize anything in the pictures? Have you been where they were taken?

Writing III, Spring '08 Exam: Reflecting Pools 4-9

The exam for this semester calls for written reflections (short essays) on three topics. You need to post original responses to the questions on each topic in separate comments on the Writing Studio Blog during the exam period. This post lists the locations for your comments. I've posted the topics and test items in a slide show, and provide a link to it below.

During the exam, I suggest that you compose and check your responses in Word. Then you can copy and paste your reflective responses into the comment windows on individual posts listed below.

You must be logged-in in order to post comments on the Writing Studio Blog. On occasion, students have reported difficulty logging in with Google/Blogger usernames and passwords, when they were ready to paste responses into comment windows. So you should go to your own blog first, and log in there before the exam begins.

If you compose more than one paragraph in response to individual items, please use two (2) keyboard returns to create white space between paragraphs in your responses. White spaces between paragraphs (not between related sentences) make it easier for readers to find your main points.

The table below contains links to locations at which to post reflective responses for each item during the regularly scheduled exam for Writing III, Spring 2008, §§ 1a and 1c (2008.07.23). For each item, there are two locations called Reflecting Pools, one for each class section. Please make certain to post written reflections for each item only once, and only at the appropriate locations for your section:

Proto-Portfolios 0.0a: Updates for May 2008

As you are up updating your proto-portfolios to complete the data sets for May, would you please add our three technical blogging categories for the Writing Studio this semester. It is time to start counting the numbers of:

1. Posts with graphics (photos or other illustrations),
2. Posts with hyperlinks (links other than those to graphics in the posts themselves), and
3. Posts with more sophisticated media (audio, slide shows, videos, Voki..., what have you).

Primo Travel Slideshow: Hot Off the Press

Project Platypus has once again pointed out a primo site to browse in a post called The Dales Way, tagged "listening, photography, [and] travel" (March 8, 2008). This time it's a slideshow from the Guardian's (a U.K. newspaper's) travel gallery called The Dales Way footpath (© Guardian News and Media Limited 2008).

The images in Kevin Rushby's presentation are beautiful, the countryside idyllic, the soundtrack superb, and the commentary fairly easy to understand for someone who isn't British (<grin>!). About the only drawback in the entire show, and not a serious flaw at that, is that it uses captions only on the last slide to point out where you can get more information about the footpath (The Dales Way Association) and accommodations along the way (updated March 2, 2008).

If you want to read all about Rushby's walking holiday, you can. It's in the Guardian's travel section on Yorkshire (N. England): Walking on eggshells (March 8, 2008).

To get an idea of the general location, zoom in on this map. Then maybe Pukman will drop by and give us a homegrown perspective on that part of the country.
