"Students need to understand that learning happens not only during reading and studying, but in all sorts of ways, so that they can examine their own habits to know which ones may be helping or not, and [then] make adjustments" (Chen, 2014, Experimenting with Learning Tactics, ¶4).In a KQED Mind/Shift post, Ingfei Chen introduced a book written by a former colleague and science reporter, Benedict Carey (2014), entitled How We Learn: The Surprising Truth .... Then Chen went on to highlight and give examples of three key take-aways from the book that she['d] gleaned from an interview with the author.
The post included some wonderful tips for self-aware and self-directed learners. Moreover, the voice recording that accompanied the article was of the highest quality imaginable ("Press Play to Listen ..."). Kudos to the unnamed voice artist who made the recording!

ReplyDeleteHi Rina,
DeleteAs I've suggested in a reply to Ruka (Sept. 25, below), I think interest is a key.
So what ways can you envision for discovering or developing interest in what you do?
Cheers, PB
I found that I should change my mind for studying. I used to think forgetting is bad. However, it was natural and i didn't know that forgetting is a critical part of learning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting us know, Kurea, that you've changed your mind about how natural it is to forget things. I'm curious, however, about what you now see as the connection between forgetting and learning.
DeleteI think that forgetting is good things to remind my studying skills. I mean I can understand what I forget it or not.
DeleteI often don't know how to study. Therefore, I want to study more than now.
ReplyDeleteHi Momoka,
DeleteYou've shared a striking observation in the first part of your comment about often not knowing how to study. Yet the second part of your comment suggests that you think more will help you overcome that challenge.
What if any ideas have you picked up, either from Chen's article or from comments and replies in this thread, that suggest various ways to study, rather than how much? Please let us know in a follow-up reply.
Cheers, PB

Cheers, PB
I studied hard and memorized a lot few days ago of the tests, so my memorizing was forgotten soon. It seems inefficient.
DeleteIt is important to catch an essence of things than to expend long time in studying. I want to study with thinking.
ReplyDeleteHi Haruka,
DeleteYou seem to have picked up on the idea that how much time you spend studying may be less important that what you get out of it–that is, the results of your efforts.
What ways can you think of to focus more on the essence of things you're studying and thus improve outcomes or uptake?
Cheers, PB
I thought I should change how to study.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Sakiko, it sounds like you're almost ready to start.

ReplyDeleteThrough reading the link, I found I'd always studied without thinking, so I didn't have any strategies of learning. I'd like to decide the goal of it and find what I should do first.
What was your strategy of learning when you were a college student...?
I've edited her question to remove a family name.
Hi Ruka,
DeleteAt the beginning of your comment, I think you put your finger on a deep-seated problem–studying without thinking.
One of my approaches was choosing a wide variety of subjects that interested me. Another was trying to find connections or at least see similarities between what and how I was learning in one class or department and another.
Does that give you any good ideas?
Cheers, PB
I'm sorry for writing your family name and thank you for giving me your strategies.
DeleteI learned not to choose one but to find some subjects I was interested in.
I think that I want to study more effectively. Too study is not good for learning, so I want to study as hard as I can.
